What action can a person injured by a product defect take?

Every Los Angeles resident makes mistakes from time to time. And yet, some mistakes are worse than others, such as when someone is injured because of the mistakes of someone else. Making matters even worse, sometimes these injuries could have been fully preventable. When a person or business failed to take proper steps to remedy the situation, serious and fatal mistakes could occur.

Feds: 80 percent of defective tires not fixed

It can seem as though Los Angeles residents are constantly bombarded with news reports of danger to them and their families. In reality, individuals are typically more at risk of being injured from ordinary events like a car accident on the way to work. The trouble is that even these incidents can be caused by hidden dangers that might not be known to motorists.

Volkswagen Admits to Designing Software Intended to Deceive State Emissions Testing

It was recently discovered that Volkswagen intentionally installed software capable of altering its diesel vehicles' emissions during state-required smog tests. The affected diesel vehicles were programmed to recognize when they were being tested and would reduce their emissions to permissible levels. However, during normal operation, the vehicles produced emissions that were 40 times greater than allowable levels.

Airbag manufacturer begins ad campaign aimed at consumers

The company responsible for manufacturing defective airbags that have led to eight deaths is launching an advertising campaign to encourage consumers to have the defective airbags fixed. The consumer outreach effort relates to exploding airbags that have led at least 11 car makers to recall approximately 32 million vehicles. The company's current efforts are aimed regionally at areas that experience high levels of humidity, as a connection between humidity and the exploding airbags has been made.

Design defects and product liability

Although Californians expect the products they purchase to be reasonably safe, sometimes they are inherently dangerous. Sometimes defects occur during the manufacturing process, but in some cases, the defects are in the design, causing serious injury to consumers. In this post we will discuss what constitutes a design defect and when consumers may have the ability to file a product liability claim.

Product liability suit filed for defective coffee makers

Millions of Californians wake up every morning to a cup (or two) of coffee. Very few imagine that they could be burnt or seriously injured by their coffee pot, but it's happened thousands of times for owners of one model of Black & Decker coffee makers. Enough is enough, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Department of Justice, which have filed a joint complaint against the parent company, Spectrum Brands Inc., for knowingly selling a defective product and not working to resolve the issue in a timely manner.

Takeda to pay $2.4 billion to settle product liability suits

Many Californians rely on prescription medications to make them feel better, whether they suffer from short-term pain from injuries or long-term effects from a chronic health condition. Unfortunately, some medications have serious side-effects, and while manufacturers have a duty to disclose these, some of them attempt to hide them from the public. That was what Japanese drug manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceutical is accused of doing after it found out that the diabetes drug Actos could potentially cause bladder cancer. The company is now paying the price - to the tune of $2.4 billion.

CPSC report details injuries and deaths linked to child products

People tend to be more responsible and protective once they become parents. Most California parents want to provide safe products for their children's use. However, not all products are safe for children. In fact, even some products designed for children pose dangers. These unsafe products include some cribs, mattresses, playpens and car seats.
