Work-related accident at LAX takes worker's life

A workplace accident can be painful and emotional for any worker, including those in California. The effects of such an incident on a worker's family can be even worse if the accident results in the loss of life.

Los Angeles International Airport was recently disturbed by a workplace accident in a runway service area. According to the LAX Police Department, an airport employee in his 50s was killed around 5:00 a.m. when he was hit by a luggage cart after apparently falling out of the vehicle on an airport service road. The worker was unconscious when emergency responders arrived. Paramedics declared the employee dead at the scene.

No other vehicles or workers were involved in the work-related accident, authorities said. They believe the airport worker lost control of the vehicle or possibly suffered a heart attack before being hit by the cart.

The man's death had no effect on airport flight operations.

The county coroner's office later identified the victim as a Los Angeles resident. The accident is now under investigation by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Every job comes with risks that could include unsafe working conditions and exposure to hazardous tools, processes, materials or chemicals.

No matter what causes a workplace accident in California, an injured employee may be eligible to claim workers' compensation. Workers' compensation insurance may cover the costs of medical care from an injury or illness and make up for lost wages and the costs of any permanent injuries.

If an accident leads to death, worker's compensation insurance may provide benefits to the worker's family. However, these benefits do not cover the emotional suffering of a family enduring a loss. Consulting a legal professional who thoroughly understands worker's compensation laws may prove valuable to surviving family members.
